Surely any machine is meant for reducing workload of mankind and so as the washing machines which reduces the energy-busting work in push of few buttons. In terms of money invested to the utility this appliance tops in my list of kitchen helpers.

At the beginning of technology, many innovations have been discovered, and each of them has improved the lives of mankind in one way or the other. As a general guideline, you’ll want a washer with a capacity of at least 6kg to 7kg washing machine to efficiently wash the average family (4 members). Washing Machine – Buyer’s Guide

As I have worked in Research and Development department for last 26 years, my all purchase decisions are done after good amount of research. Particularly since I am spending my hard earned money, its evident to consider Value for Money product which provides me long life service means a durable product.

So lets look at the various types and features of washing machines available in Indian market as on date.

What Size of Washing Machine shall I buy for my home?

Answer of this question is based on answer to the following mostly asked questions –

1. Does a washing machine’s capacity in kilograms measured in WET or DRY clothes?

2. How much clothes can you put in a 6kg washing machine?

3. How many items of clothing make up each kilogram of laundry?

While you first see any Washing machine advertisement or technical specification, you will see that the capacity of washing machine is described in kg.

You will see capacity as a 5kg machine, or a 7.5kg washer, or a 10kg appliance, Now remember that this specification does NOT indicate the weight of the machine but it indicates the kilograms of DRY cloths the machine can handle.

So when you see a 7 kg washing machine, meaning is that it will wash 7 kg of dry garments.

Just for reference I am giving a general guidelines for calculation of weight –

1kg of laundry = 5 shirts OR 1 shirt + 1 pair of denim jeans OR 2 bath towels

So by thumb rule of above guidelines – a 6kg washing machine will be able to handle a laundry load of around 30 shirts, or a dozen bath towels.

As a thumb rule, a 6kg washing machine will efficiently wash the doona from a single-sized bed. Doubles will need 7kg, Queens 8kg, and Kings 9kg. And to get a full-sized set of floor-to-ceiling curtains washed you need at least 10kg capacity washing machine to clean them well.

Types of Washing Machines

Depending upon the extent of automation, there are two types of washing machines in market –

1. Semi Automatic Washing Machine
2. Fully Automatic Washing Machine
   • Front loading washing machine
   • Top loading washing machine

Now lets look at indepth differences in between these types of washing machines –

Semi-Automatic vs Fully Automatic Washing Machine

Semi Automatic washing machines have separate tumbler and separate dryer compartments, and after completion of washing, you need to manually pick up the washed cloths and put in dryer compartment.

Means semi-automatic washing machine will need manual intervention to dry the cloths, you will have to keep watch and wet your hands into Laundry Detergent Powder water which is not at all comfortable especially during winter and monsoon season.

Also semi-automatic machines, you will need to drain out detergent water and refill the machine with fresh water to complete the cloth cleaning, which is again cumbersome manual intervention process.

What it all means that in today’s world where getting homeworkers is becoming extremely difficult ( + Costly ) and most of the couples are working, you can’t afford to spend so much time in attending one task.

So mostly Fully automatic washing machines are becoming popular over years due to the fact that it does not need any manual intervention at all. The fully automatic washing machine are programmed in such a fashion that once you put in your laundry into machine, washing, spinning, and drying all happens sequentially without any monitoring or manual intervention. You need not touch the wet cloths, put your hands into detergent water at all.

Further Fully automatic washing machines are provided with heating system, which means it can handle all types of cloths as well as you can get almost 90% dries cloths, which is again a must have need in current scenario.

Now if you might have decided to go for Fully automatic washing machine, they have two options, to choose from – Front loading type or Top loading type of automatic washing machine,

lets look at the differences in between these two types –

Front Load vs Top Load Washing Machines

Front loading type washing machines have cloths loading door at the front (vertical) of machine, whereas in the top loading machines, you will load cloths from the top door of machine.

One survey shows that people from the Western countries prefers the front load machines whereas Indian people generally prefer the top loading ones.

All front loading machines are fully automatic machines, whereas Top loading machines can be semi-automatic or Fully automatic.

Which type of washing machine consumes less amount of water?

Semi-Automatic Machines consumes least amount of water, then comes the top loading and last the front loading type, see the info-graphics chart showing the typical water consumption of each type.

Obviously the front loading type machines consume more electricity too, and has comparatively longer washing cycles.

Do I need Inverter washing machine?

Firstly do not misunderstand that inverter washing machine means the one runs on UPS or inverter at home! No, absolutely no. Its a myth, it has no relation to the inverter.

Let me explain, inverter technology machines empower the motor as per the need, which means it will sense the cloth washing load on machine and adjust the motor speed/load to precisely meet the loading conditions. Which means the washing machine will run optimal at all  loading conditions.

So still some machines are indirect drive, which means the tumbler drum will be driven by motor through belt transmission, however this results into friction drive losses as well as maintenance of belt. So efficiency is less and you may experience belt slippage in case of increased load.

Whereas most of the modern machines now come with direct drive, means the drum will be directly driven or mounted onto motor main shaft, these are having more efficiency and no fear of slippage over increased washing load.

Further the direct drives are supported with intelligent logic of inverter technology, hence working smartly, further improving the working efficiency.

So in short, inverter technology is a way ahead, although they are slightly costly than direct drive, I will advise to get hands on them, since in long term it will payback more money, also saving national energy consumption.

What size of washing machine is suitable for my family?

Modern nuclear families generally consists of 4 members, and a 6.5 kg fully automatic washing machine shall suffice the purpose, taking care of the daily laundry as well as occasional heavy loading too.

Which washing machine technologies will remove ink blot on your T-shirt pocket or the largest of bed-sheets and curtains?

Flexwash and TwinWash

Now considering advantages of both the top loading and front loading machines various brands have come-up with fusion of techniques, obviously each companies have their owned patented inventions gone into it, you have to choose the brand plus technology carefully.

As an example, Samsung has introduced the Flexwash option with the flexibility of using both the designs in the same machine. Samsung main front loader has a capacity of 21 Kilograms and the miniature top loading has a capacity of 3.5 Kilograms.

So the first innovation is to use the power of bubbles in cleaning clothes.

Top washing machine brands like IFB and Samsung have introduced bubble cleaning technique with cold water as well as hot water. The cold water technology is specially for India, where most of the time in the year are with average 25-30 degrees temperature and one need not go for hot water washing the laundry items.

Samsung has introduced the EcoBubble technology which converts the detergent particles plus water mixture into bubbles, which removes the most stubborn of dirt particles in the fabric by penetration of micro bubble particles.

Whereas Brand IFB has their own invented O2 Wash which works on similar grounds to clean the fabric gently.

6-Motion DD and Wave Motion

Some companies have deeply researched the motions done by human being during washing of cloths and tried to simulate the same action using different motor movements, this provided optimal wash cleaning.

Few Brands to name like LG, Samsung, and IFB have invented their own wash cycles, to populate the human motives behind cloths cleaning by hand.

as an example brand LG has introduced the 6-Motion DD technology (refer to the info-graphics above this paragraph) which uses simple six wash motion types namely, Tumble, Stepping, Scrubbing, Swing, Rolling, and Filtration. This cycle combination results into high quality washing preserving fabric life still removing stains. Most of the latest LG models carry this technology.

Another brand Whirlpool uses the SoftMove technology which have load sensors inside the drum, which chooses appropriate program automatically based on the load and type of fabric loaded inside the machine.

Whirlpool motion technology consists of Energetic wash, Soft cradle, Power Shower, and Slow Motion depending in the fabric loaded into the machine.

Lastly brand IFB have also engineered wash styles like Air Bubble Wash, 3600 wash, Cradle wash, Steam wash, and O2 wash.

Drum or Tub Design and Material

Drum or tub is the most important part of washing machine, which comes into contact with the fabric and does the main task of cleaning. It also comes in contact with water and detergent mixed water all the time. Thus selection of drum material and the porosity profiles is a challenge for most of the manufacturers, they have to strike the balance between cost and function.

Now the drum can be made from different materials such as porcelain-enamel, stainless steel, or plastic.

Out of the above, Best drum material is stainless steel which lasts long and functions best, however it is costliest too.

Also Plastic drums will be better than the enamel that generally rust and chip.

Now when the material provides you durability, the drum inner/outer shape/profile and porous hole pattern provides the fabric cleaning quality.

Each of the manufacturers have developed their own technologies for the drum designs, which can provide best fabric cleaning in least amount of efforts. (and hence consume less power)

The top notch company Bosch which is know to hold numerous patents worldwide, have their unique drum technology, as called as the VarioDrum technology, which provides the diverse movements of the paddle as the drum changes its spinning direction.

Bosch Variodrum technology employs the flat side of the paddle for cleaning the loaded clothes, while the drum spins around. Now as soon as the drum changes spinning direction, the steep side of the paddle comes into the picture by delivering a profound cleaning experience with its unique wave-droplet design.

Siemens uses somewhat similar technology to the one described above.

Samsung has its own Diamond Drum technology, having 25% smaller holes for the top loading machines. The small  holes are located inside a diamond-shaped depression which prevents the clothes from sticking out of the drum thereby acting like anti-tear of fabric.

Further the Eco Drum Cleaning technology used by Samsung sanitizes the drum by eliminating the harmful allergens. They use a system which makes use of hot water and powerful jet streams to sanitize the drum, as well as increase the effectiveness of the detergents.

Soaking of cloths

Again the traditional cloth washing involves soaking of cloths, which helps removal of deep dirty stains from the fabric. Which means soaking of cloths is an important part to get good cleaning quality.

The same is simply incorporated into the washing cycles by different manufacturers in different fashions. The simplest way is added pre-soak delay before start of washing cycle, its similar to the cloths soaked into the detergent water for an hour or so before washing.

When it comes to removal of toughest stains, it is evident to use hot water, normal hand wash can’t be done in hot water, however for a washing machine its a breeze.

Famous brands like Samsung and Whirlpool have already incorporated  ceramic heaters in their washing machines which can heat the water quickly, thereby giving you an effective fabric cleaning in very less time.

Also the water heating prevents the build-up of stubborn calcium salts on the drum.

Furthermore the temperature can be controlled as per the type of fabric, there are hundreds of cycle options which you can easily select from the control panel which selects appropriate temperature for the type of fabric you want to wash.

And finally some of the washing machines do comprise the steam settings that moreover assists in getting those stains and dirt out of the clothes.

Improved NVH (Noise reduction and Anti-vibration technologies)

Remember those olden days where the washing machine used to swing as the drum rotates back and forth! and the complete machine used to vibrate during the dry spinning cycle! And most of them used to make lot of quirking noise during operation.

Gone those days, with high improvement over the nise and bibration pattern generated due to the drum and cloths movement during washing cycles.

The modern lifestyle demands of quieter operations have made researchers to work on improvements in NVH of washing machines.

as an example the leading brand Samsung has came up with VRT+ (Vibration Reduction Technology Plus), which is an improvement over the existing VRT ensuring the lowest noise and harshness levels during operation. It uses  the presence of noise-sensitive light sleepers.

Wherein the Bosch uses high tech sensors to introduce the Anti-vibration technology which maintains the load balance by automatic load balancing in drums.

Can I use washing machine with hard water?

India has this problem of having to use hard water for washing purposes. The problem with hard water is that it becomes difficult to dissolve the detergents in it.

Secondly, you also end up with deposits of salt around the drum and supply pipes resulting in choking them. Therefore, you find Indian washing machine manufacturers employing innovative techniques to deal with this issue.

Whirlpool has a specific ‘Hard Water’ option in its latest semi-automatic machine series, Ace. This option allows eliminating dirt from the clothes even when the water is hard.

Better is to look for machine with auto dispensing facility, with slight payment of premium it is worth function.

Smart washing machines!

Yes, not only you get smartwatches and smartphones, but also smart washing machines!

Remember the NFC is a part of most of smartwatches enabling you easy payments without use of credit cards? Similarly latest LG machines are equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) tags that enable diagnosis and monitoring.

Here NFC is not used for payments, but for the problems detection and analysis.

This is not a must feature, but if your budget permits, you can go for it.

Delay Start setting

As already explained it is soaking time for cloths before start of washing cycle. Since it is already deliberated I will not spend time again iterating the logic.

The washing machine fetches the needed quantity of detergent + water, and keeps the cloths soaked until the predetermined time is reached. Resulting cleaner laundry.

Air Wash

Again this is available in some of the high end washing machines, where the pressurized hot air is used to remove unpleasant smells, microscopic allergens, harmful bacteria and microbes.

Really useful for woollen coats, cotton jumpers, sweaters and suits.

Tub Clean

This program removes odors by washing off any soap or mold that has accumulated inside the washing drum and then running a drying operation for 30 minutes.

Rinse

The rinse cycle on any washing machine is simply to “remove” (rinse out) the residual soap that may be in the clothes in the washer. That cycle is usually followed by the “spin” cycle which removes as much of the water as possible, making drying more efficient.
