Over years I kept on going to the floor mill shop to get the grains grinding done, however as the prices per kg for grinding kept on increasing as well as the adulteration too made me think on buying a Domestic Flour mill or atta chakki (in Hindi) – study updated 2021 considering that Lockdown due to Covid 19 will need going out of home less frequently. So having atta chakki at home will make you more safe.

But then the first question came to my mind was if it will be really worth investing 10000 to 15000 Rs just to get grinding done at home? hence I did economy study of grains grinding in floor mill versus grinding it in domestic atta chakki. Further I weighed down the advantage of doing it at home as against buying ready-made atta from the supermarket, but the quality of that ready-made atta was not that good, even the branded ones! The chapati quality was not upto the mark!! somehow, may be its a psychology ! but I thought like most of the Indians, best way is to buy Wheat or Bajari and make atta from them.

Why I don’t buy Ready-made Flour?

• Commercial flour mills remove about 30% of the wheat kernel, that is where you loose the most important nutritious part of the grain!
• Commercially milled flour removes all of the wheat germ oils to prevent it from going rancid and increase the flour’s shelf-life. Now point to note down is that 90% of the nutritional value of the wheat berry is contained in the wheat germ which you are obviously loosing!

Benefits of Home Atta Chakki [which I felt after using it for last one year]

• First and foremost thing is that I am sure that there is no adulteration and I am getting the same quality of wheat which I have bought (no mixing with some other customer low cost, low quality wheat or any other grains mixing happening)
• My domestic atta chakki retains all the nutrients from the grains like Carbohydrates, Proteins,Vitamins, Fibers etc. and the result is good quality of Chapati made at home (now)
• I could feel the change in taste of Chapati or Bhakri or Roti made at home using the atta from the domestic flour mill, it gives a wonderful taste that is surely being lost to commercially made whole-grain flour.

They have various options of atta chakki in various price range as per the features, this particular deluxe model is fully automatic one.

So lets look at some salient features of this deluxe model from Haystar.

iSafe feature : Machine sensor makes automatic stop once the grain finishes or there are not grain in hopper.

Child safety feature : If door is opened accidentally by kid out of curiosity while machine is running then it stops motor / grinding operation automatically.

Low noise : I have checked this practically and the operation noise is almost equal or slightly lesser than a home mixer grinder. (I checked this using an mobile app showing dB level same as mixer grinder)

Low electricity consumption : Overall grinding operation consumes electricity about 0.5 to 0.75 unit per hour which is very less. This obviously saves your money and time, on an average it will cost you 3-4 Rs for 10 Kg, as against  traditional flour-mill shop will cost you 50 Rs. What is an Atta Chakki or Gharghanti?

A small grinding machine (generally stone less) running on household single phase supply and used for griding grains at home to get flour from mostly all types of grain.

Some of the latest versions are fully automatic and available at affordable cost.

How an atta chakki (gharghanti) is used ?

Generally a manual atta chakki is has two circular shaped stones rolling over each other, and looks like traditional shop flour mill mini version, with a hopper at the top, however these are slightly unsafe due to the fact that someone can put hands inside during operation.

Modern agged, atta chakki are safe, contained in a enclosure, and are fully automatic and Safe for home use. They also make lesser noise.

So there will be small hopper at the top, from where grains are poured (with auto feed control) into a grinding chamber, where the actual crushing of grain takes place. Crushing happens using rotating blades (metal) powered by a motor. The machines have sensors and micro-controller to detect grain and adjust the speed of grain input.

How long it takes to grind 10 kg?

• Almost 1 hour including loading unloading.

How much electricity bill we have to pay for 10 kg ?

• For 10 kg you will have to run an atta chakk for 1 hour. Where it will consume about 0.75 unit (Almost 5.5 Rs which results 0.55 Paise per kg)
• Now remember if you go outside to grind atta, you will normally use your two wheeler (Even some people use 4 wheeler) to goto the floor mill, in this case you save valuable petrol.
  So if you take into account the amount of petrol saved per trip to the flour mill ! then practically you grind flour for FREE !

What will be the payback period if I buy Atta chakki for about 15,000 Rs ?

There will be intangible gains too, means you get high quality of atta & right quantity at home only, no more mixing of low quality grains of other customers, no dependency on commercial flour mills, no waiting outside shop to get 5 kg grain grinding, no more trips in rains or summer days to atta chakki shop,

How expensive is it to maintain, repair or replace some part if there is some problem?

• Not known as no repair in last 3.5 yrs.
• There are no parts which can wear like stones etc. Steel blades does not need any maintenance.
• In case blade needs to be replaced current cost is around 500 Rs

How many years it works without any trouble ?

• No repair in last 3.5 yrs [Based on feedback from two of my friends using this atta chakki]
• Recently I got one friend whose father bought a local made atta chakki ~15 years back which is still working fine without any maintenance issues.

Can you grind turmeric pieces?

• Yes, you can grind turmeric pieces but also Red chili, dry masala and all types of dals and pulses.
• Tip for best results : Break turmeric in small pieces before putting into grinder.
• You can grind corn flour., jowar, ragi, chana dal, sabudana, sugar, dry grains, pulses, dals

Is it portable?

• Yes, most of the modern atta chakkis are having caster wheels, so easy to move around home.
• However if you wish to keep it in single place, select rubber legs provided with chakki in place of caster wheels.

Does the stone needs repair / regrinding ?

• Now modern atta chakkis have metal grinding wheels, so no issues of stone wear and tear or periodic maintenance.

What is self cleaning chamber? what does that mean?

Some atta chakkis has built-in vacuum cleaner, where we can connect a suction pipe & clean the mill chamber.

Some of them have Auto cleaning chamber, where the blades rotates at high speed for 3-4 minutes thus creating air pressure to clean the chamber automatically by pushing down all the flour from grinding chamber into the container. Therefore no cleaning needed for the grinding chamber.

Can I grind WET grains like for Idli

• These atta chakkis are designed to grind only dry pulses, you can not grind wet grains since cleaning will be an issue.
