Does a Room Heater Deplete Oxygen Level in the Room? Actual Experiment done by me

June 4, 2024 By admin Leave a Comment

While its winter now and main question asked all over internet is Does a room heater deplete oxygen level in the room?

So I tried to actually experiment and check if the Room heaters really burn oxygen in a room and here are the results of the experiment for you all.

Note – Please note that this experiment is not conducted in controlled environment which is generally done in labs, however it can provide you general safety guidelines

So to answer this query I will begin with…

Type of room heaters which are mainly used in India

  1. Electric Room Heaters

  2. Gas Room Heaters

  3. Coal Room Heaters

In India mostly all types are used depending upon the terrain, specially where money and electricity availability is problem , people tend to use coal or gas heaters.

Whereas in urban areas mostly Electric heaters are popular.

For this specific experiment I have taken Electric Room heaters only.

If you have time do watch complete experiment I have done on my YouTube Channel TrekBook India

So what I have done is taken out the room heater rod available in market for 80 Rs.

This is heating element used in cheapest heaters in India so I have used it to check oxygen burning

To check the Carbon Monoxide CO levels in the box I have used CO Poisoning Alarm Detector which operates on 3 AAA battery cells.

Just see below image for the

CO Gas Sensor Detector Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Alarm Detector

  • Green LED: Flashes every 30 seconds to indicate the unit is operating properly.
  • Red LED: When a dangerous level of carbon monoxide will detect the red LED will pulse and a loud alarm pattern will sound. Alerts users when batteries need to replace.

Remember that Extreme cases are reported when people use gas room heater or burn coal in room for heating and caused deaths due to lack of oxygen (generation of carbon monoxide in room)

Hence using electrical room heaters is safe solution for burning oxygen or generation of carbon monoxide in room

Look the news below for the death caused during night due to room heater

room heater causing death due to lack of oxygen

BTW coming back to our expriment

Here I have experimented and checked whether carbon monoxide is generated using traditional coil room heater or fan type room heater or oil fin heater

I have used carbon monoxide monitor to check CO levels in room

When I checked CO levels while the electrical room heater element is in operation or fan type room heater in operation I found that the CO levels are not changed indicating that the electric room heater elements are not burning oxygen in room

This is because the electrical elements generate heat using electricity and not by burning oxygen like Coal or Gas heaters, hence they do not burn oxygen in room.

So final Result of experiment is that electrical room heaters do not burn oxygen but use electricity to generate temperature.

Coming to the other health issues while using room heaters

There are 3 problems observed during room heater use

1) Suffocation
– caused due to expansion of air and lower density of oxygen
2) Vomiting’s sensation
– caused due to expansion of air and lower density of oxygen
3) Nose dryness
– caused by lower humidity
– to resolve this issue you can put a bucket of water in room with wet towel in it
